CHC Update October 22, 2021

Please see the updated information regarding mask use at Veterans Memorial Rink.

Effective Friday, October 22, West Hartford has repealed the town mask mandate that required masks to be worn in all town facilities. All unvaccinated individuals must continue to wear masks indoors, in compliance with the statewide mask mandate.

Specifically for WHYHA families, all skaters and coaches will be required to continue to wear masks while in the rink. This includes on the ice, on the bench, in the locker rooms, and in the lobby, regardless of vaccination status.

Veterans Rink intends to post updated messaging to reflect these changes and will ask all rink entrants to wear masks if unvaccinated. Vets staff will be wearing masks while in the Lobby, but has been authorized to remove their masks when behind the front desk.

To be clear, all WHYHA vaccinated skaters and coaches are still required to wear masks in the rink, as are opposing team players and coaches.

With regard to games in other towns, please take note of and adhere to local town and rink policy, remembering that CHC policy mandates that all on-ice participants (skaters, coaches, officials) are to wear masks, but different towns and rinks are following their own local policies regarding spectators.

Thank you for your assistance and for helping us to maintain the health and safety of our children. Our goal remains to keep our kids in school and on the ice throughout the season.

Congratulations to former WHYHA goaltender Liam Joyce

Congratulations to former WHYHA goaltender, Liam Joyce.

Liam currently plays for Shattuck-St Mary's in Faribault, Minnesota (home program for a young Sidney Crosby) and is a goaltender on the 2007 U14 team, which, as of this writing, is undefeated with an 18-0 record and ranked #1 in the United States in the 2007 AAA division.

Liam got his youth hockey start here in West Hartford with the Wolves, not as a goalie, but as a skater in the Squirt ranks. He filled in for a game as goalie (subbing for an injured teammate) and, over the next season, he went from splitting time in net to only playing goalie, registering one of the best seasons in recent memory as a Pee Wee goalie in 2017-18.

After 2 seasons with the CT Junior Huskies, Liam left home at the tender age of 14 and headed to MN to pursue his hockey and academic career at one of the perennial powerhouses in the hockey world, with former SSM rosters including the likes of Zach Parise, Derek Stepan, Drew Stafford, and Jonathan Toews.

Best of luck, Liam. Go Wolves!
